Your Bowling League

September 30, 2008 at 12:45 pm (Ben's Musings) ()

The Alley proudly sports two bowling teams in the Saturday night Park Grove league.

Pictured above is half of our team… (missing are both Smith families, Tina, Paul and myself)

Can’t say I’m all that good of a bowler, but Brian’s 84 on opening night has made me feel a little more confident!

Though, the fact that his mother (Shelley) bowled an opening night turkey and trounced my best score with her worst has kept me from getting too overconfident!

From Fantasy Football… to Hockey… to Bowling… to Scrapbooking… to the Women’s Shelter…  I love how our people are connecting in “3rd places” outside of the church bubble.

A special thanks to Tim for putting it all together for us!

Bill Gates uses a Mac!!

September 25, 2008 at 10:08 am (Ben's Musings, in the news) (, , , )

In response to the popular Apple “I’m a mac.  I’m a pc” commercials, Microsoft has put millions of dollars into their own, “I am a pc” commercials.

Oddly enough, these guys, discovered that the commercials pushing pc’s were actually created using macs!

Now, there is a lesson in practicing what you preach!

Thanks to Collide Leadership for turning us on to this story.

What the world is searching for…

September 17, 2008 at 7:29 am (Ben's Musings) ()

For the second time in recent months,  we have had someone directed to this blog after searching for extreme amounts of scorpion venom.

I’m not sure whether to be entertained or scared.  But for those entrepenuers out there… this could be your opportunity to get in early on a growing market!

At 39 million dollars a gallon, it’s better than liquid gold.  See link here.

Seven Prayers

September 15, 2008 at 9:06 am (Bible, church business) (, )

The following are the seven prayers I have for our church as we celebrate our 1st year.  I am so proud of the people of our church.  I am amazed at how God is moving among us!  And I am excited about where He is leading.

ONE:  I pray that we would be always content but never comfortable.  (Philippians 4:4-12)

TWO: I pray that we have a heart for the broken.                                               (1 John 3:16-19)

THREE: I pray that we would be a people of repentance.                                 (Luke 5:32)

FOUR: I pray that we would pursue Spiritual wisdom.                           (Ephesians 1:16-18)

FIVE: I pray that we would not just know about God, but know God.                (Mark 7:1-8)

SIX: I pray that we would live with an eternal perspective.                     (Philippians 1:22-30)

SEVEN: I pray that God would look upon us with favor.                         (Numbers 6:22-27)

A Night Of Worship

September 12, 2008 at 9:08 am (music reviews) (, )

As many of you had probably heard on our local Christian music outlet that Chris Tomlin was putting on a special shin-dig @ Club 3 Degrees this past week.  I had the opportunity to attend and I was richly blessed by it.

If you have not been to Club 3 before I strongly urge you to check it out sometime.  They have great concerts week after week, a weekly church service a few times a week, cafe in the basement, and so much more!  If you have been there before you know that it is an intimate setting and it was perfect for this event.  We were able to sit right up near the stage and get a full view of Tomlin & Co.

They started the night off with some standards like “Your Grace is Enough” & “Forever” and started moving into the more current works.  The latter part of the set was comprised of songs off the new disc “Hello Love”, which was kind of the other reason for the night; a precursor to the mega tour that will kick off this winter.

The new CD may take a while to become a regular on your playlist.  It’s comprised of the usual P&W melodies and up and down tempos with breaks thrown in here and there.  But when you get down to it, it’s filled with truth that needs to be heard time after time.  Bottom line is; it’s Chris Tomlin so you know it’s good stuff.

The best part of the night for me was perhaps not having to worry about guitars being in tune, musicians being on the same page, wondering if the sound system will fail, etc.  It was a chance for me to just worship.

They comp’d everyone with a special worship leader’s edition of the new disc which was really nice and I also got to have this cheesy picture taken.

I encourage you to get tickets for the big even this March.  Tomlin will be coming with Israel Houghton whom if you haven’t seen or heard before; they’re amazing.  Should be a great night.

Where were you on 9/11?

September 11, 2008 at 7:43 am (in the news) (, , )

It is seven years today since 9/11 happened.  That was one of those moments that most people have etched into their memories.

At that time, Katie and I had been married a little over a year and our first child was just weeks away.  In fact, I remember that the stress of the event caused a mini baby-boom.  A lot of people went into labor early.

I was an intern pastor and had been teaching a class to the 8th graders when the first plane struck.  I remember coming into the church office, hearing people tell me that New York was under attack and was watching live feed when the second plane crashed in.  My first thought was that someone was shooting missiles.

Those were days where people were searching for God in a way that I have not seen since.  I pray it doesn’t take another tragedy like that for us to seek him.

Where were you?

Guiding Principles (4 of 4)

September 10, 2008 at 9:22 am (church business) ()

Principle 4: Less program, more interaction

Less programming in the church means more interaction outside of the church.  We are careful as a church not to get so busy doing church things that we miss what our primary calling is.  We choose to invest our planned activities in things like the Women’s Shelter, St. Martin’s Table or the Food Shelf.

What we do, we want to be intentional, relational and organic.  We invest in our people, we equip them to talk about Jesus and we love our community.

Big Bang or Big Bust

September 9, 2008 at 4:04 pm (Ben's Musings, in the news) (, , )

Big news today on the Big Bang.  Scientists are trying to recreate the Big Bang that supposedly brought all things to be as we know it.

Story here.

Some say it could be the end of the world. Some say it could be the biggest breakthrough ever.  And others say it could be a colossal waste of time.  I suppose time will tell and I doubt we will hear much more.

Let me simply say, that time and time again the world of science does all it can to take God out of the equation.  Yet, science, by it’s own definition, is the manipulation and observation of natural phenomenon.  Here again is another try at explaining the great complexity of the universe, the rich creation of life and interaction that we are so used to with only natural explanations.

I think the reason that the origins of everything is so intriguing is because there is by nature something unnatural about it.  The mass of the universe is constant, the amount of energy is constant, yet some how deep down we know there must have been a beginning and that there will be an end.

I would contend that is because we are finite creatures in an infinite universe who were created by an ultimate God.

So, will we see a new universe come out of the 17 mile tube?  I doubt it.

Will the earth end?… someday for sure.

Will this prove that a Big Bang started it all? Let me predict now, that as all science seems to be lately, it will depend on how people interpret it.

Thanks to Bev for the link!
