Small Groups: Are you in one?
One of the most rewarding experiences in my life right now has to be our small group. We are a group of families that have kids all under age 4. We hook up every 2nd and 4th Friday of the month to not only study the Word together but also to fellowship with each other, pray for one another and of course EAT together! It is a great experience and it has caught on with our children as well. Our oldest talks non-stop about her Bible study friends and always asks when they are coming over. One of our families child refers to our get togethers as “Bible Parties”, who wouldn’t want to go to THAT!?!
Small groups are a huge part of our faith. The relationships and bonds that we form in our groups are essential to our growth in the Word and in the faith. If you aren’t connected yet please consider it. There are groups ready to connect with you and new groups are forming all the time.
Oh yeah, this little pep talk was inspired by a great article that I read at www.larknews.com …..
OWENSBORO, Ky. — A small group from Rolling Hills Christian Church arrived at a place of unprecedented honesty with each other last Tuesday when they discovered that nobody in the group actually liked anyone else.
“We all realized, ‘You know what? I don’t care for any of you, and I find your kids annoying,’” says one man who was present.
The moment of openness came while they planned their annual small group camping trip. Some disagreed over dates and camping locations, until one man finally said, “To be honest, I don’t relish spending any extra time with any of you, especially not a week-long trip.”
Others voiced their agreement and several people applauded.
“It hurt so good,” said one participant. “I felt huge relief at not having to pretend to like these people anymore.”
The discussion progressed as people revealed what they disliked about the others. Marty, a middle-aged umarried woman, was singled out for being too socially needy and bringing up the same prayer requests she’s had for the past five years. The group was also tired of praying for her “unspoken request” which everyone knew was to find a husband.
The Perez family was blasted for allowing their children to run around the house unchecked and eat the adult desserts before the adults had a chance to eat them.
“I made the loveliest pumpkin cupcakes one time and the kids inhaled them in about thirty seconds,” says one woman. “From that point on, I just brought store-bought snacks.”
Everyone voiced annoyance at the homeschooling family but couldn’t find a specific reason to, given that the daughter sits quietly in the corner reading Little House on the Prairie books.
“I guess she’s mousy. That’s about the worst I can say,” said one member.
The outpouring of truthfulness came five years after the group was created by a church secretary who is now employed elsewhere. At the time, the secretary was responsible for placing all church members into small groups by geographic proximity, age and “sometimes the sounds of their names,” she says.
But this group struggled to gel.
“I always looked for reasons to like everyone, but I just couldn’t find them,” says one woman. “I’m just put off by each person.”
Another man says he worked hard “to enjoy their company and find common interests, but I just couldn’t do it.”
Now, he says, “I’m tired of wasting one night a week on them. I’m even tired of the smell of their houses.”
The group agreed to have what they call a “Paul-Barnabas split” in which they part company willingly, with hopes that the others flourish in some other environment, away from the rest.
To the surprise of many, the experience has given them a common bond.
“I like these people a lot more since we all admitted we don’t really like each other,” says one man. “I still don’t want to meet with them every week, but at least we have a real relationship now.”
If you hadn’t guess yet, LarkNews is a bit of a spoof. A la the Onion of the church.

We’ve got swim meets, they’ve got…
So, since being at the Junior High we’ve had the opportunity to rub shoulders with multiple basketball tournaments and a swim meet. But, this weekend, as I guest spoke at a church in Chicago, they shared a facility with, Super Nanny. That’s right. Super Nanny!

I wondered if parents weren’t secretly hoping their kids would act up in hopes that they could be noticed, and make it on the big screen.
It was a very cool experience. The church, called Sanctuary, was a ministry with similar values and practice to our own. They are very community focused and worship in an eclectic dinner theatre.
Seriously, the SuperNanny thing was no big surprise to them, other weeks they’ve had autograph sessions with some of the original munchkins and a host of other events running simultaneous to their worship!
PLEASE END IT ALREADY! Thoughts on American Idol…
This is a tad dated, but related: Some have talked to me about my thoughts about AI using ‘Shout to the Lord’ on the show a few weeks back. The first night they sang it I believe the word ‘Savior’ was substituted with the word ’shepherd’. The show apparently did not have permission to change the lyrics and are involved
in some talks with Integrity (song publisher) over that. The real story here is the fact that some people were outraged by it or distraught over the fact that there were some people on stage who aren’t Christians who were singing the song (they came back and sang it the next night but that time using savior instead of shepherd).
My first reaction was kinda similar to those who were upset. But the more I thought about it the more I started to think that the old saying “Any press is good press” maybe held some truth here. Sure they weren’t saying savior that first night but everything else remained intact and the truth and power of the message was still there. In fact we often call Jesus our ’shepherd’ do we not?
I dug a little further and found that even Paul believes that any press is good press. He writes in Philippians 1:
15 It’s true that some are preaching out of jealousy and rivalry. But others preach about Christ with pure motives. 16 They preach because they love me, for they know I have been appointed to defend the Good News. 17 Those others do not have pure motives as they preach about Christ. They preach with selfish ambition, not sincerely, intending to make my chains more painful to me. 18 But that doesn’t matter. Whether their motives are false or genuine, the message about Christ is being preached either way, so I rejoice. And I will continue to rejoice.
Ok, that’s enough on that….so let’s get this out in the open right off the bat; I like ‘American Idol’ (AI). So what? It’s a guilty pleasure and there are far worse things that I could indulge in. I have to say though that this season has been incredibly dull. I lost count of the nights watching where performances had left me simply bored. Or as Simon likes to put things; “It was forgettable”. Amen brutha.
So tonight starts the multi-hour snooze fest. A who’s who in pop culture with glitzy lights and Seacrest induced drama like never seen before. I wish they would just get this thing over with so the winner can go on and make a overly controlled album that will be mediocre in sales while the 2nd place dude can be free to make their own record and become a rockstar.
I guess my inkling would be to have Archuletta win so that Cook can be a little more free in his musical career. I’d much rather hear what he has coming than the other.
What a weekend…
This was my (Ben’s) first weekend away from theAlley since launch in September. I have to say it was a lot harder on me than anyone else. I missed the worship, the people, family fun day and serving at the shelter. I missed and I was wowed… at all that God is doing through our community. Pictures can say so much more, so check these out!
Thanks to Jon, Denise and Rick for leading a great event serving alongside of the women’s shelter.

Thanks to Ingrid and all of our AlleyKids leaders for putting so much time, energy and passion into this incredible ministry!

Thanks to Shawn for a most excellent sharing of your testimony!
Thanks to Dave for sharing your gift of teaching!

Thanks to Jon… for not blowing up the school but amazing everyone with your object lesson!

And thanks to Brian, for your servant’s heart, partnership in theAlley’s leadership and your most excellent verticle!

I did have a good time and a great experience in Chicago… I’ll share more on that tomorrow.
Laminin…..it’s not athlete’s foot powder.
Kind of a cop-out blog posting today (hey, it’s Friday) but you gotta see this (if you haven’t already). This is a snippet from a talk from Louie Giglio (often tours around with Chris Tomlin, Matt Redman). Louie has a great spirit and a real passion for teaching on the awesomeness of God. I hope you enjoy this video as much as I have:

Typically my night stand has a stack of books.
Here is what I am currently reading…
The Missional Leader: Equipping Your Church to Reach a Changing World
Very enlightening book. Best quote so far. Most churches, denominations and seminaries are preparing people to be effective in a paradigm that no longer exists. The analogy that stuck says this, “It is as if we are prepared to play baseball and suddenly discover that everyone else is playing basketball. The game has changed and the rules are different.”

A great read, and so many deeper allusions. I’m anxious to see how well those come through on the big screen.

Primal Leadership: Realizing the Power of Emotional Intelligence

Just starting this one, but intrigued so far. They make the argument that one of the fundamental tasks of a leader is an emotional one, creating resonance. Defined as ” a reservoir of positivity that frees the best in people. At its root, then, the primal job of leadership is emotional.”

A new finger on life…
Not long ago I was reading an article in the Trib about how scientists at the U are reviving rat hearts. It is an amazing process of stripping down the cells and then triggering them to rebuild. I won’t quote this directly, as I don’t have the article in front of me, but one of the scientist made the statement that they had spent years trying to do this on their own. Then they decided to utilize and manipulate what was already in the cells and it worked.
Now, I hear that and think, “Wow, God is amazing!” The complexity of molecular and cellular science is so beyond us.
And here today, I come across another story. Where a powder is used to trigger the already built in ability of cells to regrow. See it here!
Seriously, a man who had the tip of his finger cut off has seen it completely restored!
When will scientists who so often use the word designed and so readily admit how much they have yet to figure out about the complexity of the world begin to see that it simply could not have happened by chance!
Pregnant with number 18!
Have you seen this?
A 41 year old mom is pregnant with child number 18! So far everyone has a name starting with the letter J. And, God willing, they aren’t done yet. See the story here…
quite some time ago (I think she said junior was like 25 now). Anyways, it go to be so bad (the lying) that they decided to take what I think are some pretty drastic measures…..but I could be wrong. The scenario carried out something like this:
