Stories from the Field

January 18, 2008 at 11:30 am (Stories)

Every week at theAlley we talk about “taking it to the streets” or are reminded that “we live in a mission field”.

So how’s that going for you?

We’d like to give a forum for sharing “stories from the field” with each other. Just add a comment to this post. You don’t need to add your name, but feel free to.

What are the struggles, joys and stories that come with living your faith, or trying to live your faith in the world that you live in?

Jon Foreman – Fall, Winter

January 15, 2008 at 1:29 pm (music reviews)

Are there any fans of Switchfoot in the room? The band has been quiet for a while now but with good reason. The reason being that singer/writer Jon Foreman has been out on his own working on his solo album. Now his emotions and feelings are being poured out on this album and the results are excellent.

What you are going to get with this release is a 2 disc set. Disc 1 entitled Fall (previously released last November) and disc 2 Winter. Each disc has it’s strengths and sounds. In the end I lean a bit more towards the tracks on Fall. The songs are very simplistic sounding and mostly acoustic. At times it almost sounds like Foreman is going to fall asleep the vocals get so tired but that’s what makes it so great. I seem to be in some sort of niche right now where music of this genre is really growing on me (see review of Feist). It’s either that or I am suffering from SAD.

The Winter disc is equally as good but I would rate it just a tad lower due to it’s ultra-downtrodden tone. The opening track is entitled “Learning How to Die” and serves as a reminder of how each day we are closer to our last. Not really the musical pick-me-up I was looking for. The disc starts to redeem itself again with the next track; “Behind Your Eyes”.

The lyrics are pointedly Christian and oftentimes derrived straight from the Word. “White as Snow” (Psalm 51) & “Equally Skilled” (Micah 7) are just a couple examples.

Overall this is a great collection of songs to accompany you in some of your quieter moments. Maybe some background music at a party, while reading, or while writing your blog ; )

January 4, 2008 at 9:12 am (Ben's Musings)

Props to the Sunday set-up team and to Dave who set this video up for us.

This is just one of the many things this team does every Sunday with both set-up and take-down. This is about 80 minutes of work seen in approximates 33 seconds!

Thanks all, couldn’t do it without you. If you’d like to join this team, shoot a comment or e-mail and we’ll link you.
